Electoral systems

  • This page is very much WIP  e4 e5 e6
  • There needs to be a much a fairer voting system for election of the UK House of Commons. See a recent FSM note on the subject. See also a detailed but somewhat dated analysis of “Electoral reform: PR v. STV“, plus some further (old, incomplete, and rather ragged) notes on electoral reform.
  • Of possible historical interest, some ancient comments on the dreadful system which was used for EU parliamentary elections (original). ᴥ
  • ⨳Reverse the unnecessary, deeply anti-democratic change made in the Elections Act 2022 to switch to the archaic ‘First-Past-The-Post’ voting system at future Mayoral Elections in the UK, instead of the retaining the pre-existing, tried-and-tested, far more representative ‘Supplementary Vote’ system. Frankly, the only reason for making this change in voting system can only have been to increase the chances of a Conservative Mayor being elected to replace Sadiq Khan (Lab) at next year’s London Mayoral Election in May 24.
  • ⨳Follow the examples of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by implementing an optimal system of PR for local government elections in England.
    • Explain “optimal”
  • It is highly desirable to make provision for voters who explictly wish to vote for none of the candidates offered in an election.
  • It is desirable to review the basis on which constituency size is assessed.
  • There is a need for attention to the nation’s systems for the registration and identification of voters.
  • Stop the cynical manipulation of the electoral system. Many significant changes deemed to be beneficial to those in power go through with at most limited parliamentary scrutiny. But when the government was forced to consider the option to switch from FPTP to AV, which they did not want but were prevented from voting against, they held a referendum which they vehemently and dishonestly opposed.
