Accountability

⨳Consideration should be given to reintroducing the Public Authority (Accountability) Bill 2017.

This Private Members’ Bill was introduced by Andy Burnham with cross-party support from Caroline Lucas, Alison McGovern, Derek Twigg, Steve Rotheram, Maria Eagle, Jess Phillips, Bill Esterson, Tim Farron, Mark Durkan, Sir Peter Bottomley and Chris Stephens.

It would have made it a legal duty for public institutions to tell the truth in proceedings, investigations and inquiries, and to act with candour and frankness at all times.

It was due to have its second reading debate on Fri 12 May 2017 (see https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/1978/news). However, its progress through Parliament was ended with the dissolution of Parliament on 3 May 2017, in advance of the General Election that year.
